AS ROMA

AS Roma, short for Associazione Sportiva Roma, is a famous football club from Rome, Italy. Founded in 1927, they've been a major force in Italian football ever since, rarely leaving the top league. They've won Serie A three times, most recently in 2001, and hold nine Coppa Italia titles. They recently won the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League in 2022 under manager José Mourinho. Their fans are known as the "giallorossi" (yellow and red). AS Roma, short for Associazione Sportiva Roma, is a famous football club from Rome, Italy. JERSEY REVOLUTION

AS Roma's jerseys have been a consistent display of their iconic yellow and red colors throughout the club's history, but the design styles have certainly evolved since their founding in 1927.
Early Years (1927-1950s): The early years of AS Roma's jerseys were marked by simplicity.  The most common design featured wide vertical red and yellow stripes, often made of thick cotton material.  These early shirts typically had v-neck collars or a sash design across the chest.  Shorts were black or white, with white becoming more common throughout the 1930s.
Golden Age (1950s-1970s): As AS Roma entered their golden age in the 1950s, their jerseys began to reflect a more refined style.  Thinner stripes became the norm, with red and yellow stripes of more equal width.  Crew necks and collars with buttons replaced the v-neck collars of the previous era.  This period also saw the introduction of white shorts as a permanent fixture for the club.
Modern Era (1970s-Present): The core yellow and red stripes have remained the foundation of AS Roma's jerseys throughout the modern era, but designers have experimented more freely with the design. The 1970s and 1980s saw wider stripes return for a time, along with the introduction of pinstripes for a period in the late 1970s.  The 1990s saw a move towards even more variation, with the introduction of sponsor logos on the jerseys for the first time. This decade also brought more variation in sleeve and collar styles, with long sleeves, short sleeves with cuffs, and polo collars all being used at different times.  Recent years have seen a return to a more classic look, with a focus on thinner stripes and cleaner, more modern designs. However, there have still been occasional forays into bolder designs, such as the use of hoops for a season in the early 2000s.

CONCEPT KITS

AS Roma's jerseys have always been a canvas for their signature yellow and red, but the design has undergone a fascinating evolution. Early years were marked by wide stripes and simple v-neck collars, reflecting a more utilitarian approach to sportswear. As the club entered its golden age in the mid-20th century, the jerseys adopted a more refined style, with thinner stripes of more equal width and the introduction of crew necks and buttoned collars. The modern era has seen an explosion of creativity, with designers experimenting freely within the constraints of the club's colors. The 1970s and 1980s saw a return to wider stripes for a time, along with a brief flirtation with pinstripes. The 1990s ushered in a new era of commercialization, with sponsor logos appearing on the jerseys for the first time. This decade also brought more variation in sleeve and collar styles, with long sleeves, short sleeves with cuffs, and polo collars all being used at different times. Recent years have seen a return to a more classic look, with a focus on thinner stripes and cleaner, more modern designs. However, there have still been occasional forays into bolder territory, such as the use of hoops for a season in the early 2000s.
Beyond the official jerseys, a vibrant world of fan-made concept kits thrives online, reimagining the Giallorossi colors with endless creativity. These designs range from classic throwbacks that pay homage to past eras and iconic player jerseys, to ultra-modern takes that push the boundaries of design. Some concept kits are rooted in historical inspiration, referencing successful seasons or incorporating elements from past iterations of the Roma uniform. Others take a bolder approach, exploring unique patterns, color combinations, and even homages to the city of Rome itself.  While these concept kits aren't officially used by the club, they represent the deep passion and boundless creativity of the AS Roma fanbase, constantly striving to reimagine their beloved team's visual identity.

CONCEPT BY RIXEL DESIGN

This custom AS Roma jersey design is entirely my own work, and it's not something you'll find for sale in stores. I designed it from scratch, without referencing any existing kits that might have limited availability in certain regions.
My design process typically begins with selecting colors that resonate with the brand identity. I then create a few color palettes to explore different options. Once I have a few possibilities, I carefully choose the colors that will create the most impactful and visually appealing scheme for the jersey. To finalize my color choices, I often seek inspiration from design trends and aesthetics that complement the overall mood I want to evoke with the jersey.
With a clear color palette in mind, I move on to designing the details of the jersey. Here, I've incorporated a unique design element on the shoulders and front panel. This curved, triangular section features contrasting colors to create a dynamic visual effect.
The next step involves creating a pattern for the jersey. I typically use a subtle, secondary pattern that adds depth and texture to the design. This pattern is carefully chosen to create the illusion of textured fabric in the final product, adding another layer of detail and uniqueness to the overall design. This focus on intricate detailing is a hallmark of my design philosophy.
